Consumer unit in Perth

Replacing Your consumer unit

Consumer units are also commonly known as Fuse Boards. A consumer unit is a critical piece of your electrical installation. Unlike older fuse boards, the latest Consumer Units contain RCDs (residual current devices). These will disconnect the electricity supply in a fraction of a second, if a fault or the smallest change in current is detected. Consumer Units provide much greater protection against electrocution and electrical fires in your property.

When should you think of replacing your current fuse box?

  • Your current consumer unit does not have a RCD (residual current device).
  • Your consumer unit is very old and has asbestos flash guards
  • Your consumer unit is more than 10 years old . Fuses can age through use, therefore if it is older than 10 years you should get it checked by a qualified electrician.

Consumer Unit Standards

A new consumer unit should be fitted and tested by a qualified, competent and accredited electrician.  The device will be fitted with Residual Circuit Devices (RCDs) and mini circuit breakers (MCBs) and will meet the IET Wiring Regulations (BS7671:2008).

The latest Consumer Units have split load fuse boards with 2 RCDs.  They are designed this way so that if a fault develops in one of the circuits in your property, you will still have lighting and power. Each circuit is also protected with it's own MCB (mini circuit breaker). It is also worth noting that all new Consumer Units must now be metal.  Plastic ones no longer meet the latest regulations.

How much does a consumer unit cost to replace?

The cost of replacing a Consumer Unit in Perth can vary but it is usually between £300 and £500
